Hi Opponauts,
I need some advice. About a year ago I traded my 09 GTi in for a 13 TDi wagon which is what I thought that I wanted as a commuter. Dont get me wrong, its a great car that gets great mileage but its not the most exciting thing in the world to drive. I have recently changed my approach to life and Im not sure its worth it to drive something a bit boring if I have to, especially since I dont have kids yet.
So...what should I be looking at? No preference on driven wheels but decent mileage, manual transmission and a bit of storage is preferred.
Thanks in advance!

You could probably get a new Civic Si (coupe or sedan) for the trade in price of the jetta, plus a grand or two. Same goes for the GTi, but I'd wait till the MKVII comes out this summer for the states. Abarth 500 or 500 Turbo are also good cars, albeit small. also, see the first 4 used, and add them in to new as well
Used wise, The usual crowd: GTi, ST's Mazdaspeed3, WRX (STI if you can find one) Audi S4, BMW M3, old-ish boxter . Depends on what you want really

This is one of the few correct answers.

Another GTI?
If you are insane, you could get a Mini Clubman, but I have the Oppo market cornered on those.
Then you'd just be a copycat.

Ford Fiesta: the go-to. From what I've heard, it's very fun with the 1.0L engine. And the ST is apparently one of the best FWD cars ever made. It will be my car in a few months.

I was thinking about the car I'd get, the ST was on the top of my list (but not the one ) until Matt Farah reviewed it. He talks about it so much on his podcast, he fucking loves it. So does Chris Harris! What more convincing do you need?

Go drive all of these:
Fiesta ST
Focus ST
Toyobaru
Civic Si
MS3
WRX
Genesis 2.0T
X1 28i
228i
Cooper S
Lancer Ralliart
Then say, "screw it I'm getting another GTI" because anyone who lower-cases the I in GTI and TDI is never getting a non-VW product anyway.

If you want something on the more reliable side, perhaps a WRX or Focus ST, or BRZ. If you're OK with higher maintenance costs, an E46 M3 or ZHP would be my choice.

Actually I like it too... gimme a 7.3L powerstroke excursion with 4WD and I'm happy.

Yup. I was going to ETA that in, too. No V10. Just diesel and 4x4.
And probably some engine work.
Maybe a 3" lift.
Some BFG A/Ts.
And a front end replacement w/stiffer front shocks.
Maybe some King Ranch seats too.

The Countryman only weighs 3000lbs. My Z4 weighs 3000lbs, and has 265hp.
So as long as you are fine with 0-60 in 7 seconds, I'd get the Countryman S and skip the AWD.
I'm happy with my Clubman (Which is like a 2.25 door wagon), and find it entertaining to drive.

Meh, I'll pass. It needs a little more giddy-up, I think.

Honestly it really doesn't. They are more of an autocross type car than a road course car.
Straight line speed is not the end all be all of performance.
But different people find different things appealing

I guess here's my thing:
I want an Awd, 6-speed hatchback that's nimble and has some giddy-up. I do autocross, so if what you're saying is true then it would be a contender for me. However I went from a 250hp Legacy GT to a 165hp Impreza Outback which is sooooooo slooowwwwwww. It just seems that perhaps 225hp would be enough to fit the bill, but perhaps my Impreza is just not geared correctly.

It's a better idea to have winter tires over AWD.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I lived for 7 years in Chicago with 2WD cars (VW New Beetle, Toyota Matrix, and Infiniti G35). You really don't need AWD or 4WD unless you live someplace where the roads are not plowed after a snowfall, or have actual grades to the road. Even then, it's not absolutely necessary (Ask RamblinRover, who lives in the mountains of NC. He drives a Benz 300D)
But it seems to me you already came to a conclusion, and are just looking for evidence to support your conclusion (which is fine).
If you let the AWD requirement stand, you are stuck with the Countryman, the now departed Suzuki SX4, the departed Toyota Matrix, the Impreza, the departed Audi A3, and not yet here VW Golf R. Take out the Toyota and Suzuki, and you are left with The Twins (Golf and A3), the Subaru, and the Mini.
Of those, the Subaru and Mini can actually be purchased new (the New Golf R arrives for MY2015, Audi axed the A3 hatch for 2014).
So if you don't like the Mini, and you must have AWD...
Go buy an Impreza WRX.

You've kind of nailed my thought process. It's between a Golf R (they came stateside in 2011-2012) and a WRX hatchback... and possibly the Mini if I like it when I test drive it. However I'm starting to release my death grip on AWD (I'm a self-admitted AWD snob)... it's such a mileage sucker and adds a lot of unnecessary weight, but I do like knowing that my cars will get me anywhere I need them to. If I went 2WD, I'd likely keep my old Subaru for a winter beater and then get a GTI or GTD as a summer car. However, the options are almost endless without AWD

Or you could grab a JCW Countryman. If you feel like a suspension should beat the snot out of you at every opportunity.
